7 DAYS KIGALI – AKAGERA NATIONAL PARK – LAKE KIVU ADVENTURES

Day 1: ARRIVAL AT THE AIRPORT & TRANSFER TO THE HOTEL.

On arrival at Kigali International Airport and after the airport formalities, our representative outside the customs and Immigration hall will be waiting to warmly welcome you and transfer to your hotel of residence. Dinner & overnight at Radisson Blu

Day 2: KIGALI CITY EXPLORATION

Start historical-minded exploration of Kigali city with visits to landmarks from colonial, post-independence, genocide and post-genocide times i.e. Kigali Genocide memorial site where over 259,000 genocide victims were put to rest in mass graves, Campaign against Genocide museum, Belgian camp where they killed the 10 Belgian UN soldiers who were protecting the moderate prime minister before the start of genocide.

Lunch and transfer to Eco-tourism park nyandungu which provides visitors with a chance to visit a medicinal garden which showcases indigenous and native plants that have been found to possess medicinal value, the Papal Garden, whose name is derived from the historic visit by Pope John Paul II to Rwanda in 1990, various water ponds located in the park named after different lakes in Rwanda including Muhazi, Kivu, Ruhondo and Ihema which provide a comfortable place for visitors to take a health break amidst the serene natural environment. All these provide a birding experience to visitors. Dinner and overnight at Radisson Blu.

DAY 3: TRANSFER TO AKAGERA NATIONAL PARK -BOAT CRUISE

Early morning breakfast, check-out formalities assisted in by our representative. Embark on a journey to Akagera National Park.

Lunch at the lodge and check-in, drive to Lake Ihema for a thrilling sunset boat cruise to see schools of hippos, giant Nile crocodiles, water birds, buffaloes among others. Overnight: Ruzizi Tented Lodge.

Day 4: FULL DAY GAME DRIVE IN THE PARK.

Transfer to Akagera National Park reception, arrival and briefing on the park do’s and don’ts, later start a game drive in the park in search for the big 5 that include lions, Rhinos, Leopards, Elephants and buffaloes plus the 12 species of antelopes including the biggest antelopes such as the eland cape and roan antelopes, some of the 525-bird species including 4 rare birds of Akagera, reptiles, amphibians, plants, magnificent landscapes, historical sites; a place with the highest concentration of birds per square kilometer than any other national park of Africa and hundreds of hippos, to mention but a few. Overnight: Ruzizi Tented Lodge.

DAY 5: TRANSFER TO GISENYI-LAKE KIVU ENROUTE VISIT THE TWIN LAKES

Breakfast at the hotel, transfer to Lake Kivu, enroute visit the twin Lakes – Burera and Ruhondo. These Magnificent twin lakes are the excellent photogenic, serene and scenic places. The scenery at the Twin Lakes is Breathtaking as the shores of the lakes are heavily terraced and Cultivated with crops and volcanoes slopes appear green in distance. 

Proceed to Gisenyi, enjoy the views at the Lake Kivu, beach, swim and spend a night at the Shores of the Lake. Dinner and overnight at Kivu Serena Hotel.

DAY 6: ENJOY THE BEACH & VISIT THE HOTSPRING VISIT & TRANSFER TO KIBUYE

Breakfast at the hotel then transfer to the beach, enjoy waters, etc. Transfer to the Bracery to visit the hotspring. Lunch and transfer to Kibuye. Dinner and overnight at Cormoran Lodge.

DAY 7: BOAT CRUISE & TRANSFER TO KIGALI

Breakfast then start a cruise to discover the Napoleon Island named by a French traveler for its shape similar to that of the hat of Napoleon, the island is home to a number of Birds and colonies of big bats, beautiful views of the lake, learn about history of the locals and other Islands in the lake.

Lunch and transfer to Kigali. Drop off at either the airport or the hotel according to your schedule.

When Packing:

Don’t forget a windbreaker or a light raincoat. When tracking gorillas you will be in a rain forest, so it will more likely than no rain. You will need good walking shoes, socks that’s for hiking, Gorilla trekking, chimpanzee trekking. Garden gloves are also recommended to avoid stinging nettles. A light sweater for the evening is recommended and generally long sleeves and trousers worn at this time will help keep the mosquitoes away. If you enjoy swimming, bring your swimming costume, the main hotels in Kigali all have swimming pools. If your itinerary includes Lake Kivu at either Karongi or Rubavu, you will have the opportunity to swim in the lake but kindly follow the advice of the guide. A torch should be recommended for every adventure destination and Rwanda is no exception.
