Itinerary

Day 1Kigali to Akagera National Park

Arrive in Kigali early in the morning and transfer to Akagera National Park, a journey of around four to five hours. The drive is mostly along well-maintained tarmac roads, with only the final stretch on rougher terrain.

Covering 100,000 hectares, Akagera lies in eastern Rwanda along the border with Tanzania. The park is home to some of East Africa’s most scenic savannah landscapes. Open plains, woodlands, lakes, swamps, and rolling hills.

Hace lunch after check in, relax and then in the evening, enjoy a boat ride across Lake Ihema, spotting hippos and a variety of bird species.

Day 2Full day game drive

Wake up early for an early morning breakfast and then step on it for a full-day safari game drive with an expert guide. Explore Akagera’s diverse landscapes and encounter a wide range of wildlife, including elephants, lions, leopards, buffalos, giraffes, zebras, spotted hyenas, and more.

Have your packed lunch at a convenient loction and then continue with our gamedrive. Akagera is also a paradise for birdwatchers, with nearly 500 recorded species. Highlights include the spectacular shoebill, known for its massive beak, and the rare red-faced barbet, found almost exclusively in this region.

Day 3Akagera to Nyungwe National Park

Fly from Akagera to Nyungwe Forest, one of the world’s most beautiful and ancient mountain rainforests. Spanning over 1,000 square kilometers. It is home to chimpanzees and 12 other primate species including a 400-strong troop of Ruwenzori black-and-white colobus monkeys. Also a birders’ haven.

On arrival, go for a nature walk in the woods. You will see various animals like baboons and various monkey species like vervet, red tailed among others. You will also spot a number of birds as you stroll through.

Go to the hotel and check in. Have lunch and relax. Later in the evening go for the famous Nyungwe canopy walk. You will be rewarded with aerial views of Nyungwe, above which are thick canopies obstructing the beautiful sunset.

Day 4Chimpanzee trekking

Wake early for a chimpanzee trekking adventure. After a short briefing, walk through lush tea plantations before entering the dense rainforest. The forest is home to more than 13 species of monkey, over 100 butterfly species, and the occasional chameleon, making the trek full of surprises.

The trek may last one to four hours. You’ll likely hear the chimpanzees’ calls long before you see them. Once located, spend an hour observing them as they play, forage, and interact in their natural habitat.

Return to your lodge for lunch and rest for the rest of the day.

Day 5Nyungwe to Lake Kivu

After breakfast, check out and drive to Lake Kivu, a journey of about three hours offering some of Rwanda’s most beautiful views. Overlook the lake’s islands and stunning shores.

Check in to your Hotel on Lake Kivu’s north shore, which offers panoramic views across the lake and into the Congo. Spend the afternoon relaxing, kayaking, swimming, or enjoying other activities such as canoeing and mountain biking.

Wind up the day with a sundowner boatcruise for the best scenery.

Day 6Lake Kivu to Volcanoes National Park

Spend a leisurely morning by the lake before transferring in the afternoon to Volcanoes National Park, a scenic three-hour drive through Rwanda’s rolling hills.

Check in at your lodge near the park and spend the evening at leisure.

Day 7 Volcanoes National Park

Wake up at sunrise and drive a short distance to the park headquarters, where you will receive a briefing, meet your porters, and enjoy tea or coffee before beginning your trek. Porters are available to assist and ensure a comfortable experience.

The trek can last between 90 minutes and the whole morning, depending on where your assigned gorilla family is located. Once with them, spend one extraordinary hour observing the gorillas up close. Sometimes following them as they move through the forest. Your guide will position you for the best viewing and photography opportunities.

Return to your lodge for a relaxing evening and refreshments.

Day 8 Volcanoes National Park to Kigali

Begin the day with a hike to see the playful golden monkeys. Recognizable by their bright orange-golden fur and known for their quick, lively movements. They are more elusive than gorillas, making the trek both fun and adventurous.

Afterwards, return to your lodge to freshen up and have a light meal before transferring back to Kigali in the afternoon.
