Itinerary

Day 1 Transfer from Kigali to Akagera National Park

Arrive in Kigali early in the morning and begin the drive to Akagera National Park. A scenic journey 3โ€“4-hour journey. Most of the route is along well-maintained tarmac roads, with only a short stretch of rough road towards the end, where you start experiencing the true feeling of the wild.

Akagera lies in eastern Rwanda along the border with Tanzaniaย  The park features some of the most diverse savannah landscapes in East Africa. With open plains and woodlands, lakes, swamps, and low-lying mountains.

Arrive in the afternoon, have lunch at you r hotel and then embark on aย boat ride across Lake Ihema, spotting hippos, crocodiles and a variety of bird species.

Day 2 Game drives

Have an early morning breakfast and get some more packed for you by the hotel. Then quickly step out for a morning game drive experience where lots of wild animals await.

Accompanied by an expert guide, traverse the parkโ€™s stunning landscapes and spot an impressive range of wildlife, including elephants, lions, leopards, buffalos, giraffes, zebras, spotted hyenas, and more.

Akagera is also a paradise for birdwatchers, boasting nearly 500 species. Highlights include the spectacular shoebill, with its massive beak, and the rare red-faced barbet, found almost exclusively in this region.

Take as much breaks as you need, refresh, have lunch at the hotel and if not satisfied, come back for another game drive. There is no limit.

Day 3Transfer to Kigali

Have your breakfast, check out of the lodge and then step on it for our return journey to Kigali. Drive back to Kigali

Spend the day exploring the cityโ€™s key cultural and historical landmarks, including the Kigali Genocide Memorial, the Inema Arts Centre, and vibrant local markets. Not forgetting to breathe and grab a bite in-between the beautiful chaos.

Day 4Transfer to Volcanoes National Park

After breakfast, drive north to Volcanoes National Park. A stunning three-hour journey through Rwandaโ€™s endless hills.

As you approach the park, enjoy breathtaking views of the dramatic chain of volcanoes stretching across the horizon. Have lunch on arrival.

Then visit the Gorilla Guardians Village, where you will learn about the history, culture, and traditions surrounding Volcanoes National Park and its communities.

Day 5Gorilla trekking and return to Kigali

Wake up before sunrise and take a short drive to the park headquarters. Here, you will receive a briefing, meet your porters, and enjoy tea or coffee before setting off into the forest. Local porters are available to assist you and work alongside the guide, ensuring a smooth trekking experience.

The trek can last between 90 minutes and the entire morning, depending on the location of your assigned gorilla family. Once you find them, you will spend one unforgettable hour observing the gorillas. Sometimes moving with them to stay close. Your guide will ensure you are in the best positions to take remarkable photos and fully experience this extraordinary encounter.

Afterwards, return to your hotel to freshen up before driving back to Kigali in the afternoon. Spend the evening at leisure in Kigali, enjoying your hotelโ€™s dining and amenities or take off on your evening flight back home!
